You can create an 'Adhoc' network on your wireless laptop. This means you are telling your computer to be the hub of a wireless network of computers.

First off, it is going to have a name, so pick one you can remember and use again later. We can call it something like 'CribbageNet1' or 'SwapMeetNet' or 'GameOnCon'. There will be no password and there will be no encryption; the idea is that you want to create a hot spot people can join and use. (Well, you COULD do a private wireless Adhoc WLAN by using assorted security features, but the potential of having some fun with sudden new public WLAN is so much more interesting...)

Now how you do this varies a little between versions of Windows, so you should give some time over to learning how to do this. But once you know how YOUR computer does it, you can have a jolly good time, at least until the batteries fade out (get more? Plug in?). Imagine having your own WLAN down in the lunchroom, or in the hall, maybe out on the commons...

And it is TOTALLY under YOUR control ALONE. Think about that ...
  1. To create a new ad hoc network open Control Panel then Network Connections, or double click on the wireless icon in the system tray (by the clock).
  2. Click on the Wireless Network tab;
  3. Click Properties;
  4. Click the middle tab ('Wireless Networks');
  5. Click the add button.
  6. Declare the name for the new network, this is the SSID.
  7. Make sure it is an open network and encryption is disabled, this will pop up a prompt that 'The data stream could be read by others, continue anyway?' Click yes/continue.
  8. click OK.
Note that you should do a little reading before attempting this, or get a trusty Indian guide to help you. This is because you can get your self So bloody FuBar? playing with your networks while not knowing what you are about it is totally uncanny. HOWEVER, these instructions are accurate for Windows XP with Service Pack 3 and all updates as of 1/28/2010. This is a ThoughtBomb?, please ignore all side effects as it reboots your subconscious.

If you stick a wiki in it, they can go there and leave information as well. Here's a wiki for windows that uses tinyweb:

http://www.freeholdmarketing.com/WW/

This creates a hot spot, and you have a website there, and optionally a wiki, and you can use THAT for a message drop, free press, manual of whatever.

DISCLAIMER: NATURALLY, you should NEVER use such technology to evade or break the law.
