Anarchist Free University Minutes for meeting 7/19/09 (3:30-5:00)

Present at meeting:

-Angel -Possum -Corey -Petra

-held at 888 Dupont the AFU meeting/teaching space (Petra’s loft)

Agenda:

-web site - administration/communication, having been down during Possum’s absence -up date on spaces & locations to hold classes -flyer for out reach for AFU fall classes -AFU’s phone answering service -finances -Sept teaching schedule – Anarchist Free University Frosh Week. Corey is accepting/coordinating proposals for upcoming classes -announcements

Web site

-we have two different lists. One is for announcements/info the other for discussion. Discussed sending out a notice to everyone making them aware of this and clarifying btwn the two so the two are kept separate. We will also ask for feedback on how well people feel site and discussion/info lists are working.

-Decided to keep set up the same where members can’t post unless it’s okay by moderator.

-Rachael was moderating list during Possum’s absence. -Possum is moderating list for next while.

-Angel agreed to moderate the info list

Locations to hold classes

-Corey is going back to Hacker’s space in Kensington mkt to continue discussion on our using it

-Petra spoke with Jo from L.I.F.T. –going to make arrangements for Possum to come along and check space out.

-Petra is going to ask if space will be available at TYPPP space. -Petra is going to organize Possum seeing the LIFT space

Flyer

-Christian has a draft of the poster and is waiting to add the phone number Angel is securing before sending it around, we’re thought of making it more general than specific so we can use it longer before re-doing it

-was suggested that specific details regarding upcoming classes and time would be listed on the site so if there’s a change it’s not stuck with it on flyer

AFU’s phone answering service

-Angel still needs to get our new number before we have flyer printed (they are only open Mondays & Fridays – which has been a time conflicting with teaching schedule)

Finances

-wanted to get an update on the monthly fee we’re paying for our bank account -presently we’re registered as a ‘club’ giving us a lower fee

-Possum is checking into Alterna and Presidents Choice to compare s/a acc fees that are charged

-expenditure on Petra’s space improvement thus far Christian spent $20- ceiling for bathroom Petra spent $50- drapes for front room

-Christian is returning the money he is holding for repairs at the space to Possum, Petra will get money directly from Possum.

Sept teaching schedule

-Corey who offered help with those wanting to submit proposals for upcoming courses has noticed that it makes the whole process much less intimidating than it used to be.

-Corey is working with several different people helping prepare proposals for upcoming seasons.

-it came up that people teaching did not need to be Anarchists or teach their subject from that political perspective.

-discussed events to introduce new upcoming season, planned for this fall -BBQ in park -Anti - Frosh event, introducing facilitators in a inclusive respectful way (unlike typical College Frosh week)

-Angel offered to research which lists we could do out-reach on

-Plan to post to our member outreach list asking everyone to make suggestions for lists to post to

-discussed choosing a popular topic and/or guest to open season with in order to expand our crowd and gain recognition

-suggestions made were- having a panel discussion the recent strike and unions, a panel on immigration -Petra said she would get in touch with Velcrow Ripper (Fierce Light – new film) -ask Alan O’Connor if he wants to do a talk -Louis Jacob- talk on community art?
