Minutes from Picnic Working Group
August 1st, 2005 at Chris' place
Five people were in attendance: Chris S., Paola, Richard, Ashar, Ann, and Bill
Chris was the facilitator.
Richard took minutes.
The meeting was productive in that we were able to formulate a sort of tongue and cheek theme based on the mindless and age- old university tradition of frosh week. The Anti- Frosh emerged as part of an overall idea of an Anarchist Free University Fall (dis)Orientation and Potluck to be held Sunday Sept. 11th in Trinity Bellwoods Park from 2ish until 6ish.
Individuals suggested entertainment such as juggling, games, magicians, artists, medieval weapons demos., anything creative. If anyone knows of anyone with specific kinds of creative talents that would like to participate, please get them to come to the picnic.
Event promotion
Promotion of the event was discussed as well, and Ashar and Chris decided to produce a poster for flyering. Paola also was interested in designing a poster as well. Richard said he would work on a press release to fax to radio stations and perhaps place in local magazines. Publications that were to be notified were: Fuse, Now, Eye, and possibly Dose, Spirit of Kensington (?). Organizations that may also like to participate in the potluck were mentioned: Food Not Bombs, This Ain't the Rosedale Library, Uprising Books. It was thought that members of the committee could notify people associated with these groups.
Someone mentioned that Tim be contacted for getting the word out to the radio station he works at. Also, there should be a number of emails notifying members on the list serve. Police monitoring of the list serve was also mentioned as something to be aware of for various postings.
Food
It was decided that the event would be potluck, with hopefully lots of people bringing their own dish to share. Also there was some discussion of providing some veggie dogs by AFU. People should bring there own beverages, some to share.
Theme
Ideas for the Anti- Frosh theme were suggested, including mock activities like presentation of bogus diplomas, 'faculty' recognition, fundraisers, and games...these would be headed up by various people on the committee in a sort of loose way...also it was suggested that stations be set up for the activities. Some of the ideas for the Anti- Frosh activities included but are not limited to:
short scavenger hunt
barber chair fundraiser- Mohawks for Cancer
a bookbinding demonstration and garbage art exhibit
silkscreening
a sort of tongue in cheek graduation (agitation?) ceremony
including speakers...course information.
medeival weapons demonstration
someone mentioned acid tag (?)
non- amplified music/ live or radio/CD player
drum circle (it was thought that this should start around 5:00 pm)
These were ideas, not firm committments. Some debate occurred regarding obtaining a permit from the city...this was resolved. The meeting ended around 4:15 pm.
Remember if you have ideas for the picnic/ potluck bring them up at a meeting or tell one of the picnic working group members. All creative energies welcome!
